    • Conor is a Primary Teacher at St. Thomas’ Senior School in Jobstown, Tallaght and is a Masters Graduate from DCU School of Communications.
    • Conor will be presenting the findings of his research involving a case study of Media Education within the Revised Curriculum (1999) in a Dublin Primary school. He will also discuss his findings in relation to future curriculum innovation for the promotion of Media Literacy at Primary Level.

  • Anne Looney (10 mins)
    • It’s curriculum Jim, but not as we know it.
    • Dr. Anne Looney is Chief Executive of the NCCA.
    • The challenges associated with future of critical media literacy in curriculum and assessment in Ireland stretch well beyond traditional debates about ‘subject’ or ‘integrated’ approaches. Schooling has always been associated with the engagement of the non-expert (the learner) with the knowledge and skills of the expert (the teacher). When it comes to media, teachers are not ‘expert’. Far from it. To use an oft-cited analogy, they are the digital immigrants, in a world of digital natives. In such a context, can preparation and ongoing support for teachers in media literacy ever give them anything other than ‘vacation’ status in a world that is not theirs, and never will be.
  • Jack Byrne (10 mins)
    • Citizens for Media Literacy
    • Jack Byrne is chairman of Media Coop (NEAR FM), and author a number of books on Community Radio in Ireland and on alternative media practice.
    • This presentation, from the perspective of a media activist, offers a different perspective on Media Literacy, dealing with critical analysis with a view to informing future content.
